Per The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) – Stimulus Bill, Physicians must use an EHR and will have to show ongoing “meaningful use” of that EHR. Physicians would receive incentive payment up to $63,750 through the Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement systems for who adopt and use EHR. |
Payments/incentives can be substantial especially if a physician participates in the program starting 2010 or is already using EHR. Later the usage starts, lesser the payments. |
For eligible Medicaid providers, stimulus legislation provides for up to $63,750 in federal contributions toward the adoption, implementation, upgrade, maintenance, and operation of EHR technology. |
Physicians who do not adopt and use an EHR by 2014 will actually be penalized beginning in 2015. |
